Fútbol

As a player, I grew up sprinting down the wings and scoring hattricks as a striker, able to use my raw speed and athleticism to break away from the YMCA Mighty-Mites pack.  The inevitable jump from rec-league to select soccer, though, proved a humbling, learning experience as I joined the best travel team in the state at the age-group above me, full of bigger, faster, and more serious players, who, along with my first coach not named "Dad," showed me that although I had talent and decent skills, I would need to develop my game (and my left foot!) if I wanted to continue playing at a high level.  Coincidentally, the older and bigger I got, it became clear that my body type and personality were a better fit for a more central position where I could use my brain as much as my legs, so a very smart coach of mine switched me to Defensive Centermid.  Here, in the middle of everything--with the game all around me like a quarterback in the pocket--I learned to utilize my height, strength, and long legs to win loose balls in the midfield, provide the critical link between defense and attack, and orchestrate scoring chances with my passing and vision.  This change worked out pretty well for me, earning me a spot on the Georgia ODP State Team, an invitation to Super-Y National Camp with only the very best players in the country, the captain's armband during my senior year of high school, and a scholarship to play Division I college soccer for the Virginia Tech Hokies.  Unfortunately, that's where my dream of playing professionally fizzled out, leaving me with a void in my life that I have since filled with kick-arounds "just for fun," borderline obsessions with my favorite team (F.C Barcelona) and favorite player (Lionel Messi), and shameless daily viewings of Ronaldinho highlights.  Simply put, The Beautiful Game's impact on my life and identity can not be overstated (just ask Diana, who has said to me more than once while watching Barcelona games by my side, "I just wish you would look at me the way you look at Messi."), which is why I still spend so many hours thinking, watching, playing--even dreaming about futbol...  

With that, I now give you the ever-growing collection of videos and reading material below related to my personal favorite teams, players, and moments throughout the history of the world's most popular sport.  I feel it's important that I make clear, however, that my Barcelona allegiance leaves me horribly-biased and snobbishly-partial to what I believe to be the best club and team in the world, the best tactical philosophy and playing style in existence, and the Greatest Player of All Time (G.O.A.T.), while additionally stating that Real Madrid and Chelsea are the general worst and that Cristiano Ronaldo is disgustingly overrated.  So if any of this bothers you, I encourage you to please just scroll past all of the Barça highlights and videos of Messi making your favorite players look stupid and check out the throwback Nike Soccer commercials at the bottom that any fan of the game should remember and enjoy.  Brazil Airport, anyone?  The Secret Tournament?  Footballitis?

First Words, First Memory, First Dream

#1   First Words My first words, according to my dad, were either the Sportscenter theme song--"Duh, nuh, nuh...duh, nuh, nuh"--or "Bud," which one of the regulars at the bar where my dad worked taught me to say while slamming my empty milk bottle down on the rail for a refill.  Either way, I'm proud, but my mom couldn't be less pleased, so for the sake of keeping her happy, I say my first real word was "Mama." #2    First Memory My first memory is hard to pinpoint; there are three candidates that come to mind, but two lack credibility and all are pretty fuzzy.  The oldest comes from when I was less than one year old, in the Georgia State University daycare in downtown Atlanta, where my dad was taking classes, studying to be an English major.  The memory is strange and questionable because it feels like I'm looking down on myself, hovering over my body with a bird's eye view, and I'm just watching as I crawl up a blue padded r

The Nest

#4   The Nest When I was around four years old, my grandfather, Captain Bill, started his own production company and hired my dad, who finally got out of the bar business, abandoned his college education, and moved us into a small house in the suburbs where my mom could quit her secretary job and stay home with me full-time.  This change proved mostly positive because, in addition to the bigger backyard, which meant more space for playing sports, my dad always brought back souvenirs from the cities where he did his "shows."  But during the weekends when he was gone, I spent many a night crying while staring at the picture of us on his mousepad, and despite my mom's best efforts to keep me happy and distracted with movies and games, she just wasn't the same pitcher or goalie, and I longed for my dad's return... That said, I have nothing but good memories from this time spent with my mother, the epitome of which was our Friday routine, which still lives on today

Mammy and Pappy, Captain Bill, Grammer

#5   Mammy and Pappy Like most kids, my early identity was shaped first by my family, and I was (and still am) fortunate to have my grandparents in my life.  Growing up, I spent the most time with my mom's parents, Mammy and Pappy, who lived four hours north through the Smoky Mountains in Nashville, Tennessee.  From what I recall, they made the drive down to visit us a few times a year, but other than the boring church services, I don't remember much.  What I do remember, though, is loading the trunk of the car with presents, getting stuck on icy stretches of highway, and spending Christmas at The North Pole... I can still see their house perfectly--red brick with black shutters--and I remember the rush of the sled runs down the driveway and into the yard.  I remember playing catch in the snow with my dad, uncle and Pappy, and I can still see the sign on the red front door: "Santa, Please Stop Here!"  Inside, I can see the ceramic rooster on the island in the kitc
